How to Record Talking Head Videos in Loom (Step-by-Step Guide)
Sep 23, 2025Want to record a video of yourself talking directly to your students? That’s a talking head video—and it’s one of the most powerful ways to connect.
Talking head videos are perfect for:
- Course introductions
- Sharing your story
- Breaking down concepts face-to-face
And the best part? You can record them in Loom in just a few clicks. 🎥
Step 1: Use the Loom Desktop App
I’ll say it every time—always use the desktop app. It gives you higher quality video and way more options than the Chrome extension.

Step 2: Get Your Setup Right
Before hitting record, check:
- Camera: Use your laptop webcam or an external camera if you have one.
- Microphone: A USB mic like Blue Yeti, Shure MV7, or Rode NT-USB gives you crisp, clear sound. This is my setup…

- 🎙️Boom Arm to Attach to Your Desk: https://amzn.to/3I1SML1
- Lighting: Sit facing a window or use Loom’s Auto Lighting (from the settings menu).
💡 Pro Tip: Good audio matters more than perfect video. Invest in a mic first.
Step 3: Script vs Speaker Notes
You don’t need to script every word. In fact, that can make you sound stiff. Instead:
- Outline your main points in speaker notes
- Place them in a window near your camera so you stay natural
- Aim to sound like you’re talking to a friend 👋
Step 4: Recording in Loom
- Open Loom and select Camera Only.
- Adjust your webcam bubble to your desired size.
- Do a quick test recording (30 seconds) to check your sound and lighting.
- Hit record and go!
Step 5: Keep It Engaging
Here are a few tips to keep your talking head videos engaging:
- Do your best to look at the camera lens, not the screen (eye contact matters).
- Smile at the start—it sets the tone.
- Keep lessons focused on one key point.
Remember: done is better than perfect. Students value clarity and connection more than fancy production.
Why Talking Head Videos Work
Talking head videos create instant trust. Your students see your face, hear your voice, and feel like you’re speaking directly to them. That’s what makes your course feel personal and engaging.
